Amin and Ashley review the dark comedy anime (and manga) Watamote. We have a detailed discussion about the show’s portrayal of social anxiety.

As noted in the episode, if you would like to nominate Bastards of Kingsgrave for the Podcast Awards, please do so by October 15th via the nomination form there, under Cultural/Arts. You may fill out what you enjoy about our podcast in the comments box 🙂

  1. Ashley and Amin! What a great episode! Ashley especially, thanks for being so open about your experience! You were definitely not rambling.

  2. Have not watched the show yet but it’s coming up in my que. Can’t wait to listen to this.

  3. This was a really great episode, enjoyed the discussion. There is so much more to this show than I realised. I read the wikipedia article on the show, before listening to this, and I thought ‘it’s the plot of Never Been Kissed’ but I guess I was wrong about that.

  4. Last few episodes of kingsgrave have been great. It’s almost as If I’m the one picking the topics ❤

  5. Fantastic episode! Thanks for turning me onto the show. I find a lot of anime’s very fantastical and over-the-top (which is great!), but this one hit me on that gut-level.

As Ashley says, it’s those little details of social anxiety that the show picks up on, that most people wouldn’t even thin of, but anxious people get paralyzed by. And I love how the main character projects this meek, timid persona, but ultimately harbors this wealth of emotions and fears and ideas. It really captures how anxious people spend so much time running around their own heads.

  6. You were talking about another show, what was its name? It sounded like H.K. at first (as in N.H.K), but how’s it spelled?

  7. This is way better than a brick & mortar esmtnlishaebt.
